Established in 2004, the Wimmera Health Grain Company is a select group of specialty grain growers. It’s our mission to produce, process and supply the purest Spelt grain and flour to health food companies and bakeries across Australia.

 

With more Australians making health and wellbeing a priority, Spelt has been rediscovered as a nutritious alternative to over-processed wheat flour. The ancient grain is now a coveted ingredient among artisan and home bakers. But not just any Spelt will do.

 

In the past, many people baking with Spelt had been disappointed in the quality of product available in Australia. Even brands certified as organic were found to contain a multitude of foreign grain including wheat and weed seeds! 


The Wimmera Health Grain Company, located in the heart of the Victorian wheat belt at Murtoa, was established to improve the Spelt available to Aussie health food companies.

Ancient grain meets modern practices

Consistently producing pure, quality Spelt grain takes years of experience and skill. From developing the soil to harvesting and milling, there are no corners cut here. Our original Spelt grain is nurtured by experts using advanced farming methods.

Specialty growers

We identified a group professional grain growers and invited them to become shareholders in the Wimmera Health Grain Company. Each farmer has been selected for their expertise, and commitment to our processes and quality control. This closed group approach allows us to maintain greater quality control and traceability, from paddock to plate.

 

Healthy soil

As with any project, setting the right foundations is vital for success. It’s why our select group of farmers are dedicated to maintaining the health of their soil. Working with biological consultant Dave Pannan from Bio-Agrology Unlimited of Horsham, our growers have adhered to the biological principals of soil health to prepare their farms to grow the purest Spelt grains.

 

Original Spelt strain

Our team of farmers use only one, original strain of Spelt. Not only does this ensure the purest grain quality, its tougher grain husk is a natural barrier against contaminants and pests.

Stoneground flour

When it comes to milling, old-fashioned practices help retain the unique qualities of the grain. It’s why our Spelt is freshly stoneground just before sending out each batch to customers.
 

 

 

Advanced technology

To achieve a clean and undamaged Spelt kernel, we use the best available husking and sorting technology imported from Germany. The Wimmera Health Grain Company is the leading Australian grain producer operating with these advanced methods.


 

Healthy supply

Our growers are spread across a large area spanning from the Riverina in NSW to the Western District of Victoria. This ensures a consistently strong supply, even in the event of crop failure in certain districts.
